Pakistan contingent due today

LAHORE, March 27: Pakistan contingent is due to arrive at Lahore Airport on Monday night after taking part in the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. A total of 75 members, including 45 men and eight women and 21 officials represented the country.

Pakistan took part in 11 disciplines but could earn only one gold, three silver and one bronze medal against one gold, three silver and four bronze medals claimed in the last edition held in Manchester.

Pakistan earned the solitary gold through weightlifter Shujauddin Butt in 85kgs class. Another weightlifter Mohammad Irfan won the lone bronze medal in the 77kgs class.

Meheraullah snatched a silver medal in the 54kg featherweight category.

The drought of winning a gold medal in hockey continued as Pakistan managed a silver medal after beaten by Australia 3-0 in the final.

In shooting, Irshad Ali won a silver medal.

Pakistan’ performance in athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, squash, swimming and table tennis was disappointing.
