KARACHI: A gas explosion ripped through a canteen inside the Sindh High Court building on Wednesday morning, police said.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that a low-intensity explosion occurred at 6:15am in the new bar canteen inside the SHC building.

He said the canteen operator had apparently left the gas valve open in the night. When the canteen in-charge turned an electric button on in the morning, a spark caused the blast, he added.

The Preedy police and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) arrived at the scene and inspected the canteen. They found that the blast had been caused due to a leakage in the gas line.

The BDS in their report also pointed out that the fitting of gas pipeline as well as electric cables was not up to the mark.

They recommended removal of the all gas and electric supply system from the site.
