ISLAMABAD: The interior ministry has approved army deployment across the country to ensure peace and security during the holy month of Muharram.

A notification issued by the interior ministry, a copy of which is available with Dawn, said the federal government authorised deployment of army troops/assets and civil armed forces troops/assets in all provinces including GB, AJK and ICT for security duties during Muharram, in aid of civil power, subject to laws enforced in Pakistan.

It said the exact number, date and area of deployment would be worked out by the respective governments and ICT administration in consultation with authorities concerned on the basis of ground requirement.

Use of drones in processions and majalis banned till Ashura

Meanwhile, a meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reviewed security plan for Muharram. The meeting decided to ban the use of drones during processions and majalis till Ashura across the country.

The minister said since the suspension of internet or mobile services create difficulties for citizens, such decisions would be made after considering ground realities and security situation.

Sources told Dawn the Punjab government sought services of 160 companies of army and Rangers.

On the other hand, the Gilgit-Baltistan government enhanced security arrangements by deploying police and security personnel outside Imambargahs. Section 144 has also been imposed in Gilgit for two months while law and order in Gilgit city is being monitored through 228 CCTV cameras.
