RELEASING caged birds amplifies their demand and subsequently intensifies trapping activities. Conversely, if we collectively abstain from releasing them, which means not buying the birds anymore, the merchants may eventually free the birds and seek alternative avenues to make a living.

Similarly, handing alms to beggars strengthens the economic viability of their profession rather than addressing the underlying issue of poverty. The substantial daily earnings lure the beggars to involve their entire families in the trade, leading to its proliferation over time.

A collective commitment to refraining from providing alms to beggars can catalyse a shift in their circumstances. Deprived of immediate financial support, most of the beggars will be compelled to seek alternative means of sustenance, driving them to explore livelihood avenues.

Such a shift will be driven by the innate human drive to satisfy the basic need for sustenance. By collectively opting out of supporting begging, society can push beggars to pursue more sustainable and dignified livelihoods, ultimately contri- buting to the broader goal of poverty alleviation.

While the act of releasing birds or giving alms may appear compassionate on the surface, that fact of the matter is that it inadvertently perpetuates cycles of captivity and dependence.

By refraining from such actions and collectively redirecting efforts towards sustainable solutions, we can empower individuals to break free from their circumstances, and build better futures for themselves and their communities.
