HYDERABAD, March 16: People’s Party Parliamentarians MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur has said godowns of sugar mills are filled to capacity and urged the government to raid the godowns and end the sugar crisis.

In a statement faxed to Dawn here on Thursday, he claimed that most sugar mill owners were either ministers or belonged to the ruling party. He held them responsible for the shortage and said that these people had managed to get a NAB inquiry stopped.

He said wrong policies of the government had destroyed the agriculture sector and growers.

The PPP leader pointed out that earlier mill owners in Sindh were not prepared to purchase sugarcane at Rs60 per 40kgs but now they were purchasing cane at Rs120 per 40kgs.

He said sugarcane harvesting in Sindh had started on Oct 25 but mill owners did not start the purchasing before Dec 1. He said this had resulted in delayed sowing of wheat, adding that after sugar, the country would wheat crisis.

MALAKHRA: The adviser to the Sindh chief minister on livestock and fisheries, Faqir Jadim Mangrio, has said Malakhra (Sindhi wrestling) holds great importance as a sport of Sindh and added that efforts are being made to promote it.

He was speaking as chief guest at the opening ceremony of Malakhra in Bhitshah on Wednesday in connection with the 262nd Urs of Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.

More than 150 wrestlers from Sindh and Punjab are taking part in the competition.

Sindh Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sports Qamar Mansoor, who presided over the ceremony, said the sports department would hold Malakhra competitions in every district of the province.

He said Malhs (wrestlers) would be encouraged.
