SAHIWAL: The wheat market in Sahiwal has witnessed a significant decline, with prices going down from Rs3,000-3,100 to Rs2,600-2,700 per 40kg within a week, sources say.

Punjab President of Pakistan Kisan Ittehad Chaudhry Rizwan told Dawn he was concerned over the situation, adding farmers had no control over the open market and attributing the crash in prices to the Punjab government’s delay in deciding whether to purchase wheat or not.

He said Pakistan Kisan Ittehad and Kissan Ittehad had decided to launch protest against the Punjab government from Multan on May 10.

Muhammad Hussain, provincial president of Kisan Ittehad, said the central executive committee was currently in session in Mian Channu to plan the drive.

The Kisan Ittehad will hold a protest rally in Karachi on May 12. In Sukkur, a rally will be held on May 13. It will enter Punjab in Rahim Yar Khan and reach Multan on May 14.

Protesters will reach Lahore on May 15.
