SCHOOL STATUS: The Injra R.S. Boys High School and Girls High School have not been upgraded to higher secondary status by the Punjab government. Injra is a centrally located town with more than 25 villages in its surroundings. However, there is no higher secondary school within a critical 20km radius. The Punjab government should direct the authorities concerned to upgrade the existing high schools in the area to higher secondary status in the best interest of the people so that the local students may be able to acquire education with peace of mind and without having to travel to other cities.

CLEANLINESS DRIVE: Our religion has put special emphasis on cleanliness, calling it ‘half the faith’. However, our government schools — from their restrooms to the classrooms — portray a sorry state of affairs. The students and the faculty have to put up with the consequence of such an unhealthy environment. Public washrooms anywhere in the country have the same lack of cleanliness about them. Even the washrooms in mosques are often not as clean as they should be for the faithfuls. The government and its various relevant agencies should pay attention to the matter. What the country needs is a nationwide cleanliness drive.

CASHLESS SOCIETY: It is high time the government transformed the country into a cashless society. The use of cash over a certain amount must be prohibited. The government should reward those who pay their utility bills via cheques or make online payments. Unfortunately, there are some banks that charge a fee on online payments. I started paying my credit card bill online and was shocked to find that the receiving bank charged a rupee for every thousand rupees on electronic transfers. Needless to say, this encourages people to make payments by cash, which is surely not what the government wants. Or is it?
