THE World Intellectual Property (IP) Day was observed around the globe recently (April 26). The theme this year was IP and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Building our common future with innovation and creativity. It is of critical importance to recognise the pivotal role of IP in driving sustainable development, particularly in developing countries like Pakistan.

IP rights enable local entrepreneurs and innovators to design solutions that are most suited to their communities — be it renewable energy technologies or green products. Though there are hurdles, such as complex IP systems, countries like Pakistan can use IP for attracting investment, transfer of technology, and building local capacity. Additionally, international collaboration will multiply the impact of IP in reversing the economic strife that we, the Pakistanis, currently face.

As such, we should appreciate the transformative potential of IP towards inclusive and equitable development, leading to economic growth and enabling the people to thrive on the basis of their creativity and innovation.
