KARACHI, March 11: The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (Pima) and family members of Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed have demanded immediate release of the two doctors following their acquittal by the Sindh High Court on Saturday.

They maintained that the continued detention of the physicians despite the acquittal was illegal and contempt of court.

Addressing a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, President of Pima’s Karachi chapter Dr Misbahul Aziz appealed to the high court to order immediate release of the doctor brothers.

The Pima chief was accompanied by Dr Shershah Syed, Dr Abdul Hafeez and Mrs Fauzia Akmal, wife of Dr Akmal Waheed.

They questioned the need of courts if their verdicts were not complied with by jail authorities. In this context, they observed that people were losing faith in judiciary.

They maintained that the doctor brothers were respectable citizens and renowned physicians of the country who had nothing to do with terrorism or any other kind of anti-social activities.

“Their sole crime is that they had provided treatment to patients as per the oath every physician takes that he will treat any patient without any discrimination,” they added.—PPI
