KARACHI: The Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) on Wednesday demanded that a three-member judicial commission be constituted to investigate the allegations levelled in a letter of six judges of Islamabad High Court about alleged interference of executive branch and operatives of intelligence agencies in judicial affairs.

It also strongly condemned any interference in judicial functions and commended the judges for defending their oath, bringing the matter up and advocating for protection of judicial independence.

According to a statement issued by the SHCBA, an urgent meeting of the managing committee of the bar was held and adopted a resolution on the subject matter.

It said such interference, particularly influencing the outcome in politically-motivated cases, compromising the reputation, performance, integrity and impartiality of the judges and undermines the judicial process and legal system.

“The SHCBA demands that a judicial commission consisting three hon’ble judges of the Supreme Court to investigate and probe the allegations and take firm steps to stop such interference”, it added.

The statement further maintained that the SHCBA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the independence of judiciary, supremacy of constitution and rule of law in the country.

The bar also called for the establishment of institutional mechanisms to safeguard the independence of judiciary, including measures to protect judges from threats and external influence and strengthen accountability mechanisms within the judiciary.

“The SHCBA commends the courage and valour of the above-named honourable judges of Islamabad High Court who have defended their oaths and brought attention to the grave issue of interference in their duties and functions and have advocated for the protection of judicial independence”, it concluded.
