KARACHI, March 9: The Sindh High Court set aside the conviction of a man in a kidnapping-for-ransom case and ordered his release if not required in any other case. Mohammad Zada, along with Ibrahim and Ayaz, was sentenced to seven years in prison by a special court for suppression of terrorist activities in Karachi on May 28, 2005. They were prosecuted for kidnapping a two-and-a-half-year old boy, Jehangir, for ransom in Peerabad on Aug 7, 1995.

The prosecution alleged that they demanded Rs800,000 from the boy’s parents as ransom.

The appeal of Mohammad Zada against conviction was heard by an SHC division bench, comprising Justices Mohammad Afzal Soomro and Justice Rehmat Hussain Jafri. For detailed reasons to be recorded later, the conviction and sentence awarded to the appellant was set aside.

Judgment today: An Anti-Terrorism Appellate (ATA) bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC), comprising Justice Mohammad Afzal Soomro and Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafferi, fixed Friday for announcing judgment in an appeal filed by Doctor Akmal Waheed and Arsahd Waheed, adds APP.
