SWABI: The Swabi police have launched a campaign to impress upon the people to resolve their disputes through peaceful means and avoid resorting to violence to settle their scores as enmities have claimed 23 lives since the start of Ramazan.

District police officer Haroon Rasheed Khan has directed the DSPs of all the four tehsils and SHOs to use mosques for the purpose.

He has also sought help of ulema and jirga members in this regard. He said longstanding enmities were born over trivial matters, and jirgas could be instrumental in ending enmities and forging brotherhood among the warring groups.

DPO Haroon Rasheed said they were taking concrete steps to make the district a cradle of peace.

DSP Jawad Khan told Dawn on contact that the campaign was launched to convince people to end hostilities and maintain peace and order.

He said services of dispute resolution council were also hired to help ensure peace in the society.

Jirga members have expressed their determination to fully support the police in their campaign for peace.

SEIZED: The police seized 65,700 packets of firecrackers from an Afghan national on Saturday to prevent their use on Chand Raat and Eid days.

Police officials said the use of firecrackers had been banned and the violators of the restriction would face law.

DSP Jawad Khan said Maqsood Khan, living in Tehkal Bala area of Peshawar, was transporting the firecrackers to an undisclosed location in a vehicle, when he was arrested.

He said strict action would be taken against the traders found selling firecrackers to people, especially children.

He said many children had been injured due to use of firecrackers over the past years, with some having lost their eyesight.
