SWAT: The residents of Swat, particularly Mingora and surrounding areas, have complained regarding the exorbitant prices of meat during the holy month of Ramazan.

They alleged that local butchers were violating official price list. They alleged that butchers were selling beef at higher rates than the official prices.

“The price of one kilogram of beef with bones is supposed to be Rs700 according to the government price list, but we have been charged Rs900 per kilogram,” said Fahad Kan, a resident of Mingora.

Another resident of the area said that like other food items, the prices of meat were also increased in Mingora. “Before Ramazan, we used to purchase boneless beef for Rs800 per kilogram. Now, during the holy month, the price has surged to Rs1,200. It is unjustified,” said Faheem Khan, a resident of Saidu Sharif.

In response to the mounting criticism, local butchers defended their pricing decisions, citing increase in costs by their suppliers. “We procure beef at Rs700 per kilogram from dealers. It is simply not feasible for us to sell it at the same price,” argued Akbar Ali, a shopkeeper.

Expressing their frustration, locals urged the district administration to intervene and enforce legal measures against those disregarding the prescribed price regulations. “Action must be taken against shopkeepers, who exploit consumers by charging exorbitant prices,” said a customer.
