BDS and PSL

THERE have been relentless and brutal attacks on civilians in Gaza by Israel for the last four months, with no signs of a ceasefire on the horizon. Muslims in Gaza continue to be targeted, resulting in a staggering death toll that has crossed the 30,000 mark. However, the global response, particularly from the Muslim countries, has been one of shock and anger, with many strongly advocating actions to hold Israel accountable. Social media platforms have become rallying forums for propagting a widespread boycott of brands and products, gaining serious momentum in various countries.

In Pakistan, the sentiment of solidarity with the oppressed Muslim brethren in Gaza runs deep, prompting a significant portion of the population to participate in the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

However, despite such efforts, there is a growing realisation that mere boycotts may not be able to effectively achieve the target at least in the short term.

It does not mean that we should not continue with the boycott. This just underlines the fact that more is needed to be done. When we talk of doing more, it also means that the boycott has to be more intense and widespread.

That being so, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has clearly struggled to draw the line between what is good for its financial health and the larger good of global society.

By the looks of it, allowing one of the brands that is being boycotted worldwide to jump onto its Pakistan Super League (PSL) bandwagon, the PCB has left many across the country disappointed. There are many who are now boycotting the PSL itself. The PCB has left the nation down.
