FAISALABAD, March 1: The city will remain closed throughout the day on Friday (tomorrow) on the call of opposition parties against publication of blasphemous caricatures and indifferent attitude of the government.

The trade bodies have asked their members to close their business and stay at homes instead of coming on roads. However, some of the trade associations claimed that Friday was a local holiday and they have no need to issue formal notice for the strike call.

The fruit and vegetable dealers and commission agents also announced observing a strike. The grain market and grocery markets of the city would also observe a shutter down strike.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leadership announced that they would stage protest demonstrations and take out rallies.

On the other hand, All Pakistan Oil Tankers Owners Association president Sharafat Khattak said the tankers would ply on roads as usual and they would not observe the strike. However, he asked the government and law enforcement agencies to provide security to them.

SIALKOT: There will be a complete shutter down strike in the district on March 3 on the call given by the MMA against the bombing of shrines in Iraq and publication of blasphemous caricatures.

It was announced at an MMA meeting held here on Wednesday with district president Amjad Cheema in the chair.

Later, MMA MPA Arshad Mahmood Baggu told journalists that all the business centres and banks would remain closed in the four tehsils of Sialkot district — Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur.

BAHAWALPUR: There will be a complete strike in the district against publication of cartoons.

This was decided at a meeting of combined opposition parties, including the PPP, the PML-N, the Tehrik-i-Insaaf, the MMA components, with MPA Dr Syed Wasim Akhtar in the chair here on Wednesday. Representatives of traders, transporters and lawyers also attended the meeting.

According to a press release, all business centres will remain closed on Friday. Rallies will also be arranged.
