ISLAMABAD, Feb 28: Pakistan on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Ezzat Kamel Mufti as OIC (Organisation of Islamic Conference) secretary-general’s special representative on Jammu and Kashmir, a move aimed at underlining the need for addressing the dispute.

“Pakistan has welcomed the decision of the OIC secretary-general to appoint a special representative on Jammu and Kashmir,” says a foreign ministry statement.

The appointment has been made in pursuance of Resolution 7/32-P on Jammu and Kashmir Dispute adopted by the 32nd ICFM held in Sana’a in June.

Talking to Dawn, FO Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam, who is also director-general at the OIC division, termed it a good development. She said it indicated the importance the OIC was attaching to the Kashmir issue.

Mr Mufti, a Saudi national, is the assistant secretary-general for political affairs at the OIC. As the special representative, he would be coordinating activities of the OIC contact groups on Jammu and Kashmir.—Q.A
