Marc Botenga, a Belgian member of the European Parliament, says the Belgium government continues to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and other nations must follow, Al Jazeera reports.

He noted with many European countries having elections this year, ongoing street protests against Israel’s attack will pressure many governments to follow suit.

“The European governments guarantee impunity to Israel, and people out there in the streets are outraged about this,” he told Al Jazeera.

At some point, European leaders will be forced to say the word “ceasefire”, Botenga said.

“There need to be consequences for Israel because Israelis have made it very clear they will not listen if there’s no real pressure, and the European Union is in the unique position to put that pressure on.”
