KARACHI: A woman and her teenage daughter were gunned down inside their home in Ibrahim Hyderi on Friday, police said.

While the police claimed that the incident was motivated by some personal enmity, the victims’ family said that they were killed by robbers.

Malir SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said that 50-year-old Mumtaz Mehboob and her 18-year-old daughter Reema were shot dead near the Syed Akbar Shah Bukhari shrine by armed men, who arrived at their home on motorcycles.

The bodies were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) to fulfil medico-legal formalities.

The victims belonged to the Bengali community.

The SSP said Ms Mumtaz was known as a faith-healer, as she used to give amulets (taviz) to people.

He said the double murder appeared to be an outcome of some personal enmity. However, investigators were also looking into all aspects, he added.

Meanwhile, Mumtaz’s husband told the media that his wife and daughter were killed by armed bandits over resistance.

Suspect killed in ‘encounter’

A suspected robber was shot dead and his accomplice arrested after an alleged encounter on main University Road on Friday.

Mobina Town SHO Abdul Sattar Magsi said that a team of Counter-Terrorism Department conducted a raid near Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre in the University of Karachi, where during an exchange of gunfire, one suspect, later identified as Haseebullah Zaman, was killed while his accomplice was arrested in wounded condition.

CTD officer Chaudhry Safdar told the media that both suspects were involved in cases of looting people after they drew cash from ATMs. He said that the raid was carried out on a tip-off.
