KARACHI, Feb 23: Sindh Minister for Education and Literacy Dr Hamida Khuhro has emphasized the need for close coordination between the government and the donor agencies working in Sindh to act in a more planned and collaborative manner for result-oriented steps towards betterment and improvement in education sector.

She said this while discussing a future strategy for education sector during a meeting with Dr Sarah Tirmizi, Senior Education Adviser of the USAID Pakistan, in here office here on Thursday.

The minister pointing out that although a steering committee comprising the government and donors was there, the regular interaction between the two sides was lacking. She noted that the ESRA under the USAID, especially for the promotion of girl education, was working well.

Dr Khuhro said, “We want to utilize the expertise and services of donors in each and every district of Sindh in a more effective way because, at present, there is duplication and overlapping in some districts.”

She said that the teaching of English and availability of computers at primary level were among top priorities of her department and these also included development of textbooks, training to teachers and proper utilization of the School Management Committees’ funds.

Dr Khuhro told the USAID official that the education department’s Reforms Support Unit had been given the task of ensuring a proper utilization of Rs1,800 million funds, meant for free textbooks for students and stipends to girl students.—APP
