HYDERABAD, Feb 22: Following armed clashes between two groups of students of the Sindh University at Jamshoro on Wednesday, police registered a case and arrested five students.

According to witnesses, two students of second year IBA department quarrelled in the classroom as a result of which supporters of both the students were informed and they clashed in the campus.

The witnesses further said that fire arms were also used but no serious injury was reported. A heavy contingent of police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the campus and arrested five students.

Following these arrests, a protest demonstration and a sit-in was held by the students as a result of which police had to intervene again and detained ten more students and took them to the police station.

Hundreds of students gathered at the main gate of the university and raised slogans against police and university administration.

A source in the university said that the DPO of Jamshoro, Attaullah Chandio also reached at the site with six mobiles to control the situation. He held talks with the student leaders who demanded release of all the students but the DPO refused to release five of them who were reportedly the main culprits. Later, an FIR was registered under section 324, 353, 147 and 149 PPC (causing hurt and rioting while being a member of unlawful assembly).

Jamshoro police confirmed the arrest of Sajid Nazir Punnu, Javed Hussain Jagirani, Saleem Hussain Baloch, Javed Nabi Khoso and Afqar alias Sarwar Tunio. Police said that the accused had also fired at the law enforcers.
