ISLAMABAD: Health Minister Dr Nadeem Jan while presiding over a meeting with the Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK) campaign’s South Asia team Regional Director, Dr Maheen Malik, has underscored Pakistan’s commitment to robust tobacco control measures.

As per a statement, the meeting focused on the urgent need for the health levy bill’s swift promulgation, with the South Asia director presenting a compelling case for immediate action.

Dr Jan, representing the National Health Services (NHS) of Pakistan, articulated the ministry’s unwavering dedication to public healthcare.

“Our ministry is resolute in ensuring the health and well-being of all citizens, particularly the vulnerable populations of children, youth, and women. We pledge relentless efforts to design and implement policies that safeguard and enhance the health of our citizens, addressing the harms posed by nicotine products,” he said.

Acknowledging the efforts of health activists in challenging circumstances over the past years, the health minister assured complete support for the health levy bill. He expressed his intent to present the health concern to the prime minister, advocating for the bill’s transformation into an ordinance.

“I stand firmly against the tribulations faced by our children, whether through conventional cigarette sales or new tobacco or nicotine products,” he declared.

Dr Maheen Malik remarked: “We are eager to collaborate with the Government of Pakistan to protect the health of our children and youth from the dangers of tobacco. Our commitment extends to supporting the government in enhancing the country’s tobacco control policy and working together for a healthier and tobacco-free future.”
