MUZAFFARGARH: A labourer hired to clear a manhole was later found dead in the sewage in Nawab Town near Ganesh Wah bridge in the city area on Saturday.

According to two children who were present on the scene, the labourer, later identified as Imran, went down the manhole to clean it but did not return to surface even after a considerable time.

On being informed of the incident, Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) officials, along with a Rescue 1122 team reached the spot and started an operation to trace the labourer.

A large number of locals, including relatives of the missing man also gathered there.

After hours-long efforts the rescuers traced the body of the labourer deep inside the manhole.

The rescuers shifted the body to to the district headquarters hospital.

Locals blamed TMA officials concerned for lack of safety measures for workers hired for such risky jobs.

They said such incidents have occurred in the past as well, but the TMA officials did not bother to take precautionary measures for the safety of labourers.
