KARACHI, Feb 14: Teachers and students of the University of Karachi on Tuesday brought out two separate rallies on campus to register resentment against the publication of blasphemous cartoons in European newspapers.

They, through resolutions, condemned the controversial publications and urged the masses to boycott products manufactured by countries involved in incensing Muslims the world over.

Under a programme, first it were teachers who gathered in a large number near the administration block of the varsity at around 12.15pm and then marched for quarter of a kilometre up to the KU post office building and then returned to the Mass Communication Department.

The teachers carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the quarters responsible for publication of the blasphemous cartoons in Denmark and other European countries.

The protesting teachers, who were joined by Vice-Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Akhlaq Ahmad, Registrar Prof Rais Alvi, Dean of Arts Dr Mohammad Shamsuddin, Dr Suhail Barkati, Dr Rafiq Alam, Dr Majid Mumtaz and Dr Abdul Qadeer expressed the view that the nefarious acts by the foreign press were aimed at destroying world peace. The rally was organized by the Karachi University Teachers’ Society.

Speaking at the termination point of the rally, the VC said the publication of cartons in question was a regrettable act, which should be condemned at all levels.
