KARACHI Oct 16: Nazim Karachi Naimatullah Khan visited the KDA’s pipe factory which is being reopened after about 2 years, for supply of pipes to the KW&SB’s K-III project.

Accompanied by DCO Karachi Shafiq ur Rehman Paracha and DG KDA Brig. Zaheer Qadri, The Nazim was briefed on different sections of the factory and the high quality pipes made there.

About 22,000 miles of pipes of different sizes manufactured at the factory have been laid in Karachi. The factory had to be closed as the KW&SB, its main client, decided to go for imported steel-pipes for its K-II project.

The factory has been reopened after the signing of Rs460 million agreement between the KDA and the KW&SB, regarding the purchase of cement pipes from KDA’s pipe factory for the K-3 project.

According to details, the K-3, is a Rs6 billion project to be completed in three years with the aim of supplying 100 million gallon daily (MGD) water to Karachi from Chillia .

Due to special efforts by DG, KDA, Brig. Zaheer Qadri, KW&SB officials agreed to procure large cement pipes of 84 and 86 inches diameter from the factory.

The agreement was signed last week between the DG KDA and MD KW&SB, Brig Bahram Khan at the KW&SB head offices. Chief engineer KWSB, Asrar Zaidi and chief engineer KDA, Mohammad Yamin, signed the document as witnesses.

The KDA will supply 5750 pipes of 84 inches dia and 1450 pipes of 86 inches dia, each having the length of 16 feet worth Rs.460 million for the project.

The KDA is in negotiation with four major cement manufacturers regarding the supply of raw material, while tender for the supply of iron bars is expected to be released within a week. The first consignment has to be delivered on 1st November.

The KDA has nearly transferred about 100 of its staff from the asphalt plant and other sites to the factory while certain technical staff, including casting operator, will be hired on daily wages.—PPI
