HYDERABAD, Feb 13: A woman booked in an attempted robbery case complained of severe police torture here on Monday. Rani Malik, daughter of Malik Allahdad of the Hali Road area, was arrested by the Qasimabad police in an attempted robbery case, on Sunday night.

On Monday, the woman was produced before a judicial magistrate and was remanded to police custody for three days.

“I have been mercilessly beaten by male policemen,” Rani told journalists. Policeman, escorting her, restrained journalists from meeting her. She, however, said she had been booked in a false case on the complaint of Shafqat, who had been making advances on her but she had snubbed him.

Nasreen Shakeel Pathan, coordinator of the HRCP’s special task force for Sindh, who met the woman, told Dawn that the woman had been tortured and marks of violence were visible on her body. She said a fact-finding report was being prepared. Rani has been kept at the women’s police station under directives of the court.—Correspondent
