LAHORE: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood has termed sports important for physical health and mental growth of the youth.

He was addressing the opening ceremony of the All Pakistan T20 Cricket Tournament organised by the PU in collaboration with a sports goods brand at the New Campus Cricket Ground on Saturday.

PU Sports Department Director Prof Dr Zaffar Iqbal Butt, Additional Director Zubair Butt, Director Students Affairs Dr Muhammad Ali Klasra, Mian Bilal Khalid, Rahat Abbas and the cricket players participated in the event.

Dr Mahmood said the PU would continue to play a proactive role in promoting sports activities along with education. He said the efforts of the Sports Department were commendable for organising such a wonderful event in collaboration with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and other institutions.

Dr Zaffar Iqbal Butt said they were promoting the trend of positive activities among the students.

As many as 16 teams, consisting of first class and national players, are participating in the contest in which the winner would get Rs200,000 while Rs100,000 would go to runner-up.

Earlier, PU office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) organised a seminar on ‘Machine Learning Fundamentals & its Application in Agriculture’ at the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology.

ORIC Director Prof Dr Shakil Ahmed, Scientist at Biological Data Science Institute at Australian National University Dr Ali Zia, Deputy Director Dr Aqil Inam, Dr Khalid Mahmood and Dr Muhammad Irfan, faculty members and PhD scholars were present.

Resource Person Dr Ali Zia delivered a detailed lecture on the topic.

Dr Shakil shared his vision about the need to organise the seminar.
