MIRPURKHAS, Feb 8: A severe shortage of sugar persists in the region, the price has shot up to Rs40 per kilogram in rural areas and Rs38 in the city. Expressing concern over lack of efforts to bring the price down, community leaders have called upon President Gen Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to immediately order release of sufficient quantity of sugar in markets.

Sugar price hike was believed to be the result of late crushing season by the mills.

Hoarders have made stocks of the commodity while poor consumers were deprived of sugar.

They demanded that government should ensure proper supply of sugar in markets and also to check its price.
