ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri and his Cuban counterpart Felipe Perez Roque on Tuesday discussed bilateral issues and exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest.

Mr Roque is here to extend an invitation to President Pervez Musharraf from Cuban President Fidel Castro for participation in the XIV NAM summit to be held in Cuba in September this year.

Mr Kasuri reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the Non-Aligned Movement. The two sides agreed that multilateralism, a just and equitable economic order, democratic reform of the United Nations, and South-South cooperation were the key issues to be focused on by NAM members.

They also agreed that NAM countries should work closely in different international fora to promote common positions. The foreign minister stated that Pakistan would make its due contribution to a successful outcome of the forthcoming NAM summit.

The foreign minister conveyed gratitude for the prompt assistance Pakistan had received from Cuba in the wake of last October’s earthquake.

The Cuban assistance includes field hospitals and a medical contingent of over 2,400 doctors and paramedical staff.

Mr Roque stated that his country felt duty bound to help the affected people. He indicated plans for a phased withdrawal of Cuba’s medical contingent which would allow field hospitals to continue operating without any disruption in services.

The two officials also touched upon bilateral issues and underlined their mutual desire to expand bilateral ties. Both sides also exchanged views on various regional issues of common interest. —APP
