GUJRANWALA, Feb 7: Export of brass scrap/raw material has badly hit the sanitary industry as dozens of units have closed rendering hundreds of workers jobless.

This was stated by Brass and Sanitary Association president Yasin Butt and secretary-general Sohail Rehmat at a meeting held at the local chamber of commerce and industry on Tuesday.

They said the raw material was being exported to India while the local units were facing a crisis as the brass price had been enhanced from Rs117 per kg to Rs175 per. They said under SRO-735, raw material could not be exported, but exporters were violating the law by exporting it to India.

They apprehended that as many as 409 industrial units of brass and sanitary in the city would be closed shortly if export of raw material was not stopped.

They urged the government and the ministry to stop export of the raw material.

Chamber president Akhlaq Ahmad and other office-bearers extended their cooperation to brass and sanitary industrialists and assured that the problem would be discussed with the Customs authorities.

CAUGHT: Villagers caught two robbers after an encounter when they were fleeing after looting over 40 passers-by in Ladheywala Warraich on Tuesday.

Reports said some 10 armed men set up a picket outside the village and started looting people. Later they threw them in a field after tying them up with ropes and escaped.

When the villagers chased them, they opened fire which was retaliated. In the shootout, one of the robbers identified as Khurram was injured. He along with accomplice Ayub was caught by the villagers and handed over to police.

A pistol and a rifle besides several rounds were recovered from their possession.
