McGrath misses finals

SYDNEY, Feb 5: Glenn McGrath has ruled himself out of Australia’s remaining international matches this summer after his wife was diagnosed with cancer, Cricket Australia announced on Sunday.

McGrath had already pulled out of Australia’s one-day matches against South Africa in Melbourne on Friday and Sydney on Sunday after revealing his wife Jane had been diagnosed with cancer for a third time and needed immediate radiotherapy treatment.

Australia’s chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns released a statement on Sunday saying McGrath had informed the selection panel that he was unavailable for the rest of the series, including the best-of-three finals scheduled to start next week.

“Glenn has decided that he needs to be with his family in the immediate future and we completely support that decision,” Hohns said.—Reuters
