ILLOGICAL SURCHARGE: This is with reference to the letter ‘Naked oppression’ (Aug 28), which pointed out the difficulties the consumers are facing in paying the exorbitant bills they have received from K-Electric (KE). The pressure on the customers is immense, The element of Power Holding Company (PHL) surcharge is particularly irritating. The matter has been making rounds for some time, and has also been the bone of contention between certain political parties representing Karachi and the federal government. The surcharge has been imposed on electricity customers in Karachi even though KE, by its own account, has no contribution to the piling circular debt. That being so, what is the point of charging the customers on this count?

WHEELS OF LIFE: Consumed by the worries related to earning a livelihood, youngsters today hardly find any time to worry about their intellectual abilities. What will they do with their intellect if it is not worth putting two square meals on the table? With unemployment spreading like wildfire owing to downsizing and retrenchments in the corporate sector, there are more and more youngsters around in society who are out to grab whatever they can in the name of employment. Generation after generation, people have been spending entire lifespans busy earning, or trying to earn, a petty amount that may at best keep the wheels of life moving.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL: The absence of a traffic signal at Malir Halt in Karachi is putting lives at risk. Both commuters and pedestrians try to cross the road as they deem fit. This has casued accidents, and will continue to do that. School-going children remain the most vulnerable in this regard. The authorities should install a traffic signal to minimise the chance of accidents.
