RAHIM YAR KHAN: Two children died after falling into an open manhole in Shams Colony (Baloch Colony) in Kachi Basti area of Liaqatpur, some 90km from here on Wednesday.

According to Rescue 1122 officoals, Rehan (10) and Muqadas (8), children of Aslam, a resident of Shams Colony, were playing in the street when they fell into an uncovered manhole privately constructed by the residents.

They said that on being informed of the incident, a team of Rescue 1122 reached the spot, but the relatives of the children had already retrieved the bodies of both children from the manhole.

According to a handout, Deputy Commissioner Shakeel Ahmad Bhatti has sought a report from Liaquatpur assistant commissioner and chief officer on the incident.

Chief Officer Pervez Akhtar, expressing sorrow over the minors’ deaths told the media that there was no sewerage system of Liaqatpur Municipal Committee or District Council in the Baloch Colony and the uncovered manhole in which the children fell and died was constructed by the residents on their own.
