Governor’s Cup attracts big field

LAHORE, Feb 2: At least 243 men, women, seniors and veterans will vie in different categories of the 22nd Governor’s Cup amateur golf (54 holes) starting at the Lahore Gymkhana from Friday.

In all, 136 men will compete in the amateur’s category, 18 in the ladies, 67 in the seniors and 22 in the veterans. The main trophy is on the net score, allowing the benefit of handicap to the contenders. Defending champion Mohammad Hashim was not competing leaving the door open for for top seed Waseem Rana, Mohammad Safdar, Imran Ahmed, Mir Maaz Mahmood to battle for top prize.

The men’s competitions will be held on all three days while ladies will contest on last two days. The seniors and veterans will enjoy the competition only on the second day. Javed S Lodhi had won the back-to-back competition in 1985 and 1986.

Other notable winners have been Anwar Ali Khan, Sultan Rana, Omer Tiwana, Aftab Anwar, Asad Amin Sheikh, Murad A Khan, Shoaib Bokhari and Tashfeen Ashraf.
