KARACHI: Kunwar Naveed Jamil, a senior leader and parliamentarian of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and ex-nazim of Hyderabad district, passed away on Thursday after protracted illness. He was 59.

The late MQM-P leader had been under treatment at a private hospital for several months after suffering a brain haemorrhage. A law graduate from Hyderabad, he was elected a member of the National Assembly in 1990 and again in 2013. He was also elected as member of the Sindh Assembly in 2002 and 2018.

The deceased leader had also served as the nazim of Hyderabad district from 2005 to 2010.

In a statement, the MQM-P leader Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui described the demise of Mr Jamil as an irreparable loss to the party.

“Kunwar Naveed Jamil was a true political and democratic worker. He proved the strength and character of the middle-class and inspired youths of urban Sindh to join a peaceful struggle with commitment to the [MQM] ideology,” he said.

He is survived by a wife and two sons. His funeral prayers would be offered after Juma prayers at Masjid-i-Mustafa, DHA Phase I.
