SWABI: A couple was killed for honour in Mal Lara village of Swabi tehsil here on Monday, the police said.

DSP headquarters Jawad Khan told Dawn that a young woman, 20, and a 22-year-old man had contracted marriage in court amid threats to their lives by the family of the woman.

He said a brother of the deceased man told the police that they were sitting in their house, when two accused forced their way inside and opened fire.

As result, he said his brother and his wife were seriously injured.

He said they were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital,

where doctors pronounced them dead.

An FIR was registered against the two accused.

VISIT: Carlos Lee, Director General of the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC), has hinted at starting productive collaboration with the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology.

He stated this during a meeting with GIK Institute’s Rector Prof Fazal Ahmad Khalid on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on knowledge sharing and strengthening academia-industry ties to benefit from the industrial expertise of the European countries.

During his visit, Lee took a tour of the state-of-the-art laboratories at the faculty of material sciences and chemical engineering, showing keen interest in the institute’s contributions to students and the industry alike.

Later, speaking on ‘Lessons Learnt from EPIC’, Lee highlighted the immense potential of photonics, stating that its proper utilisation could dramatically shape future society and yield substantial benefits for humanity.

“Having a competitive edge in the industrial field is crucial for survival and further advancements,” Lee said, emphasising the importance of students gaining practical industry experience.

He underscored the necessity of academia-industry linkages for progress in today’s fast-paced, technologically competitive world.

He highlighted the challenges faced when establishing an industry in Europe, stressing the need for skilled individuals adept at applying modern technology.

He informed students about the wealth of resources available in European countries, providing them with a broader perspective on international industrial practices.

Prof Khalid welcomed the collaboration, acknowledging that Europe’s rich industrial experience would be immensely beneficial for Pakistan.
