Special persons to attend marathon

LAHORE, Jan 26: A group of 60 special persons from Karachi is participating in Lahore Marathon to represent Sindh. The marathon will generate funds for the quake survivors.

The group, arranged by the Disabled Welfare Association, has been sponsored by the CDGK. All participants will use special wheelchairs.

Meanwhile, the organizer received good response from other countries, especially the neighbouring India where special events are being held to raise funds.

Bollywood personality Vijay Grover, the project coordinator of a film called ‘Marathon Man’, and Ms Firoze Kapadia of Culture Creations’ company have decided to raise funds by organizing functions there.

Leading Mumbai personalities are said to be actively involved in India. Ms Firoze revealed a charity function will be arranged in Mumbai on Sunday, the day of the race and the proceeds will come to the fund.

A Swiss lady doctor, Clementine Holloway, is all set to run. She had also participated in the 2001 New York Marathon and is naturally an athlete. She is currently living in Pakistan and associated with French NGO, Medicines Sans Frontiers, and posted in Mansehra DHQ hospital.

Clementine arrived in Pakistan seven weeks ago and has treated a large number of victims beside dozens of routine patients at the hospital. She is also an avid mountaineer and has climbed many peaks up to 4,000 metres.

Joining nazim Mian Amer Mahmood, a youthful Lord Mayor of Kisumu, the city of Kenya, Shakeel Shabbir Ahmed will also run in the five km fun run.

The 52- year old Shakeel is third generation of Kenya whose family trace their roots back to Kamoke in Gujranwala district. —Sports Correspondent
