KARACHI: A suspected robber was shot dead and another was arrested after an ‘encounter’ in Orangi Town on Friday, police said.

Pakistan Bazaar SHO Sohail Khaskheli said that the encounter took place at Hawa Goth where after an exchange of firing, one suspect, Shah Alam, was killed while his accomplice, Daniyal, was arrested in wounded condition.

He said the deceased was involved in over a dozen criminal cases.

Shopkeeper shot dead

A 55-year-old shopkeeper was shot dead by unknown assailants in Yusuf Goth on Friday.

Saeedabad SHO Mohammed Nawaz Gondal said the victim was identified as Munir Husain. He was sitting at his shop when two armed men fired a single shot from a close range and fled.

They did not take away anything from him, he said, adding that the police were investigating the matter.

Three held for ‘lynching two men’

Police arrested three persons who allegedly lynched two men over suspicions of being robbers in Orangi Town on May 7, it emerged on Friday.

Two men were beaten to death while the third one was critically injured by a mob within the remit of the Pakistan Bazaar police station earlier this month.

SSP-West (Investigation) Mohammed Qais Khan told Dawn on Friday that 20 persons had been nominated in the case, and out of them, three suspects were arrested.

He said there were allegations of theft against the deceased persons as one stolen motorbike was recovered from their custody. Apparently, the accused were not armed and no other thing was seized from them.

According to the FIR lodged on behalf of the state, around 150 persons beat three persons with cemented blocks etc, resulting in critical injuries to them in Sector 14-C on May 7. Two of them died on way to a hospital while the third one identified as Awais Karim was critically injured. But he was unable to identify the dead.

The FIR said ‘it appeared that the mob killed and injured them over suspicions of being dacoit and barring a stolen motorbike, nothing was recovered from them on the spot’.
