KARACHI: City Administrator Dr Syed Saifur Rahman has said that the renovation and repair work of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) has been started and it will be completed in the next few months so that better and modern medical facilities can be provided to the citizens.
It is the third largest hospital in Karachi with 1,000 beds, catering to a large city population.
He shared the information while presiding over a meeting regarding the renovation of the hospital.
The administrator said the trauma center of the hospital was being completely upgraded and 100 CCTV cameras would also be installed for security that was being beefed up with the deputation of more wardens. The trauma center was being renovated with the support of the UNO High Commission for Refugees, he said.
He said the emergency, ICU and all other wards would also be upgraded and equipped with modern medical facilities.
He said medical facilities at the government level were less in terms of the population of Karachi, so there was pressure on the public hospitals and the doctors and staff who performed duties there faced many problems compared to the private hospitals.
The city administrator said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was facing shortage of resources and if private organisations and philanthropists wanted to serve the citizens of Karachi, they would be given full cooperation, he offered. The Karachi Institute of Kidney Diseases was a good example of cooperation where free dialysis facilities were provided to the people in need along with medicines and proper care, he added.
He said that thousands of citizens visited Abbasi Shaheed Hospital every day as it had a large number of specialists for all kinds of diseases. Despite the shortfall of resources, the KMC strove to provide better medical services, he said.
As the KMC resources increased, its other hospitals would also be upgraded and all the facilities, including medicines, X-ray, MRI and operations, would also be provided there, he said.
