LIBRARY FOR GIRLS: Library is an ideal place to prepare for any competitive exam. Unfortunately, there is only one library for girls in the whole of Sukkur, that is the Mir Masoom Shah Library. Girls who are studying for medical or other competitive exams face great difficulties as they have to travel long distances just to get to the library. Being the third largest city of Sindh, Sukkur needs, and should have, more libraries.

NOT A TEACHER’S JOB: Everyone talks about the low standard of teaching at government-run schools, but I find hardly anyone empathising with the teachers who are forced to undertake duties they never signed up for. They are frequently engaged in election and survey duties. How can they focus on the teaching process in such an environment? The government should desist from engaging teachers in tasks that they are not professionally supposed to do.

EMPATHETIC PEOPLE: Nepal recently observed a day of mourning to grieve the loss of 72 passengers in an air crash. Such gestures of national solidarity are sorely missing in our society. Countless people have died in various accidents, but the nation has rarely observed national mourning, barring a few occasions. Successive governments have remained unmoved, showing a total lack of empathy for the grieving families. Even simple gestures, like lowering the national flag or wearing black armbands for a day, have never been thought of.

AIR QUALITY REPORTS: The air quality index of Hyderabad is poor, with dangerous pollutants floating all around. Unhealthy air causes respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and affects air and road traffic movement owing to poor visibility. The media should give more coverage to matters of public interest.
