LAHORE: The National Awami Party chief, Khan Abdul Wali Khan, declared here today [Feb 4] that the Constitution of a country was framed not to strengthen the hands of an individual or a particular political party but to guarantee fundamental democratic rights to the people and ensure a broad consensus of its constituent units. His party believed in pure and unadulterated democracy alone and would continue its struggle to achieve that goal, he added.

The NAP leader said his party conceded to the People’s Party its right to rule over the country but would never allow it to frame a Constitution which did not ensure basic rights to the people. Mr. Wali Khan debunked the misleading propaganda by some interested quarters doubting the patriotism of NAP. …

He reiterated his demand that former President Yahya Khan should be tried so that the elements which had been responsible for the breaking up of the country could be exposed and brought to book. The people had a right to know as to who had played havoc with national unity and brought the nation to a tragic pass, he added. He said the people of the four provinces should beenabled to live like brethren where they shared each other’s aspirations.
