SWABI: The Women University Swabi (WUS) has terminated the services of 79 employees just five days after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Ghulam Ali had assured them during his visit to the varsity that their services would be regularised.

The termination letter, also available to Dawn, said that consequent upon the completion of their contract period under section 11(5) (d) of the KP Universities Act, 2012, these employees were relieved of their services with effect from Feb 4.

Sources in the varsity told Dawn that the employees were told that they were required to submit proper clearance to the department concerned for getting their last salary.

Of the terminated employees, 50 are security personnel, 16 drivers and two computer operators, junior clerks, senior clerks and senior electrician each, and one watchman, bookbinder, senior plumber, telephone operator and security supervisor each.

Meanwhile, the laid off employees have written a letter to the KP governor, who is the chancellor of WUS, pointing out that all security personnel, computer operators and other employees had been performing their duties in the university for about seven years, but the varsity administration dismissed them at once.

In the letter, they said the governor, during his speech at the varsity’s convocation on January 31, had assured that the university would regularise the services of the contractual employees, but despite the assurance they were fired. They requested the governor to order restoration of their services.
