There was no issue of Dawn on this date on account of the paper’s offices being closed as a mark of respect in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. The excerpt below is taken from the previous day’s edition.

KARACHI: The news of Mahatma Gandhi’s tragic end cast a thick pall of gloom over the capital of Pakistan on Friday evening [Jan 30]. As the news spread, newspaper office telephones rang constantly and anxious voices asked: “Is it true?” Everybody seemed stunned by the news and the first reaction was not to believe it. Most of the city’s newspaper’s including Dawn (English and Gujrati) published special bulletins carrying the first flashes of the dire news.

… Gandhiji’s assassination evoked expressions of genuine horror from officials and non-officials, Hindus and Muslims. The Indian High Commissioner, Mr Sri Prakasa, broke down completely with grief. … The Government of Pakistan and the Sind Government have ordered the closing of their offices on Saturday [Jan 31] as a mark of respect to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. All schools and colleges and the Municipal Offices will also remain closed. — Dawn Special Correspondent
