PESHAWAR: Khan Abdul Wali Khan, the NAP chief, today [Jan 20], accepted the offer of talks by the Government party but stressed that constitution-making should not be made a point of prestige. Talking to reporters at the Lady Reading Hospital … Mr Wali Khan said the NAP would attend a conference called by the Government on constitutional matters with an open heart and would fully co-operate with the Government as in the past.

The NAP chief reiterated that a constitution imposed by one party would not be acceptable to the Frontier and Baluchistan, and added that if any attempt was made to do so it would not be in the country’s interest. He recalled that his party had always co-operated with PPP and cited the Simla Accord as an example, but added that the People’s Party should also accommodate the viewpoint of others, particularly on matters of constitution-making which was above any party or personal interests.

Mr Wali Khan said the constitutional acc­ord was not a divine book which could not be amended and added even the ruling party members had also proposed amendments and appended notes of dissent which showed it could not be the last word.
