TOBA TEK SINGH, Jan 5: As run-off poll for Gojra tehsil naib nazim slot gets closer, the two major rival groups have tightened their ‘control’ over their potential voters. The groups, respectively led by tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Asad Zaman Cheema and the defeated tehsil nazim candidate, Khalid Warraich, have provided many facilities to their voters, including latest model cars to pick and drop tehsil council members.

The election was postponed on Dec 28 as both Cheema and Warraich group’s candidates had got equal (17) votes in the hose of 34. The Cheemas are backing Islam Abid, also Gojra PPP secretary, while Warraichs are supporting Ahsan Akbar for the slot.

However, the return of a naib nazim Haji Muhammad Younis from Dubai on Thursday, who announced to support Warraich group, has strengthened Ahsan Akbar’s position.

Both groups will bring their voters straight to TMA hall under tight security.

LAW, ORDER: Elimination of a gang of robbers operating from the Ravi forest was the major achievement of the district police last year, DPO Akhtar Laleka told a new conference on Thursday.

He said the forest stretched up to Khanewal district had been haven for criminals since long. He said that half a dozen members of the gang were killed in encounters while more than one dozen were arrested.

He said gang members were involved in murder, kidnap for ransom, dacoity and gang-rape cases. Besides this gang, the DPO said police arrested 754 absconders and proclaimed offenders and smashed 35 inter-district gangs.
