KARACHI, Jan 5: Speakers at a demonstration on Thursday demanded that the Shipping Ordinance-2002 be implemented fully and the corrupt officials who were working against the interests of seamen and the country be taken to task.

The demonstration was organized by the Pakistan Seamen’s Workers Union.

They said that a PNSC official had been posted as shipping master two years back on temporary basis but he was still holding the post.

They pointed out that the NIRC had directed the DG Ports and Shipping to issue a notification regarding the Advisory Committee, but the same was not being issued. They said that owing to this, the problems being faced by the seamen were increasing as the meetings relating to the charter of demand, DC Board, Promotion Board, CTPS and Welfare Contributory Fund, etc., were not being held.

They also demanded that existing ‘inexperienced’ PNSC management be replaced with an experienced and qualified one so that the organization could be operated efficiently.

They warned of launching a protest movement if their union’s demands were not met immediately.
