LAKKI MARWAT: A police constable embraced martyrdom and a terrorist was killed after a police checkpoint in Shahbazkhel town of Lakki Marwat district was attacked by suspected terrorists with sophisticated weapons on Sunday.

Just a day earlier a clash between security forces and terrorists in Janikhel area of Bannu had left four terrorists dead and a soldier martyred.

A police official said that policeman Tehseenullah was martyred and an insurgent, Awais from Abdulkhel area, was killed in a gun battle in Shahbazkhel town of Lakki Marwat on Sunday.

The official said a group of militants attacked the police checkpoint in Shah­bazkhel town with rocket launchers and hand grenades in a bid to destroy it.

“The policemen deployed at the check post also faced a fierce barrage of bullets fired by terrorists from different directions,” the police official said, adding that policemen engaged the terrorists and killed insurgent Awais in the fight.

He said the slain militant was wanted by Lakki Marwat and Bannu police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in attacks on security forces and police.

The official said that policeman Tehseenullah embraced martyrdom in the gun battle. He said that members of law-enforcement agencies launched a search operation for arrest of fleeing assailants and seized arms and ammunition from the terrorist killed in the clash.

The body of the martyred policeman was taken to police lines after fulfilling formalities at a local hospital, where his funeral prayers were held.

District Police Officer (DPO) Ziauddin Ahmed, SP Investigation Murad Khan, civil and military officials and people from different walks of life attended the funeral of the martyred policeman.

A police contingent presented the guard of honour while top police and army officers laid flower wreaths on the coffin of martyred policeman.

Later, the body of the martyr was dispatched to Karak for burial with full official honour.

Meanwhile, a constable of Frontier Reserve Police was martyred when some unidentified gunmen opened fire on him in Jarra area of Omarzai in Charsaddah district on Saturday.

Officials said that Frontier Reserve Police (FRP) constable Muzammil Shah was going on a motorcycle in Jarra locality of Omarzai when the armed attackers in a car opened fire, killing him on the spot.

The officials said the martyred constable was the gunner of FRP deputy commandant.
