Customs facing uphill task

KARACHI, Jan 3: Pakistan Customs were facing an uphill struggle to avoid being relegated after Habib Bank piled up a mammoth 506 in their first innings of the Patron’s Trophy Grade-I match at UBL Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Customs, currently placed at the bottom of Pool ‘A’, closed the second day at 74 for three and still require 283 to avoid the follow-on with skipper Azhar Shafiq (15) and Fawad Alam (9) at the crease.

Earlier, Habib Bank skipper Younis Khan was dismissed for 153, having resumed at 115. Farhan Adil and Abdur Rahman also compounded Customs’ problems with fine half centuries.

Younis’ 260-ball knock, which spanned six hours and 19 minutes, included 16 boundaries. Farhan hit seven fours in his 55 while Abdur Rahman blasted 11 boundaries and two sixes in his 82 off 83 balls.

Despite the onslaught, Customs’ slow left-armer Jalat Khan produced a career-best bowling performance with six for 128 in 36 overs.
