KARACHI: Amir Saleem and Waqar Alam Abbasi were elected president and general secretary of the Karachi Bar Association (KBA) in its annual election held a day before.

Of the 8,930 eligible voters, around 4,600 lawyers cast their vote to elect a 17-member body comprising six office-bearers and 11 managing committee members.

Advocate Saleem defeated Ali Asghar Buriro with a margin of over 700 votes.

Advocate Abbasi defeated Syed Israr Shah with a margin of over 1,000 votes.

Sources in the legal fraternity said that the newly elected president Advocate Saleem, who also served as the general secretary of the KBA, was supported by a lawyers’ group led by former KBA leaders Mahmood-ul-Hasan and Naeem Quershi, while Mr Abbasi was backed by the Mahmood-ul-Hasan group.

Mumtaz Ali has been elected vice president, Sabeeh Mahmood, a son of Mahmood-ul-Hasan, joint secretary, Hashim Thebo treasurer and Asif Korejo elected librarian.

Abdul Rasheed, Saba Soomro, Bahzad Akbar, Abid Jatoi, Qayum Quershi, Tahir Hussain, Bilal Siyal, Saima Solangi, Faheem Mangi, Samina and Abbas Saleem were elected members of the managing committee.

Malir Bar gets new office-bearers

Rao Zahid Ali and Abdul Hafeez Baloch have been elected the president and general secretary of the Malir Bar Association.

The election to the lawyers’ body was held on Saturday and the results were announced on Sunday.
