Devika dooms Pakistan to defeat

KARACHI, Jan 2: Title holders India thrashed Pakistan by 10 wickets in the last league match of the 2nd Women’s Asia Cup cricket tournament at National Stadium on Monday as hosts again failed to cross hundred mark.

The 25-year-old Pune-born debutant Devika Palshikar took three for 12 runs in 10 overs with her leg-spinners to play important role in her team’s win.

Keeping in mind India’s batting firepower, Pakistan batted first after winning the toss and crashed to 94 all out in 47.5 overs.

Mithali Raj cracked unbeaten 38 off 57 balls with five boundaries and Rumeli Dhar hit a rapid-fire 54 off 48 balls, hitting eight fours and a six off Sabahat Rasheed as India reached the target in 17.3 overs without any loss.

This was defending champions’ fourth win in row and they will take on Sri Lanka in the final on Wednesday.

Pakistani batswomen again put up a pathetic batting display and were bundled out under 100.

Sana Mir top-scored with an unbeaten 27 with three fours off 60 balls. Opener Sajjida Shah got 16 with two fours and Taskeen Qadeer 11 and Humaira Masroor, playing her first match, contributed 11. Extras were 17.

Four batswomen — Urooj Mumtaz, Arman Khan, Asmavia Iqbal and Qanita Jalil — fell for ducks.

Devika got good assistance from Varsha Raphael, who claimed two for 22 in 10 overs.
