Ashes heroes thrilled by honours

LONDON, Jan 1: England cricket captain Michael Vaughan hailed the effort given by whole side on hearing his Ashes heroes had received New Year Honours. Vaughan becomes an OBE for England’s first Ashes win since 1987 while rest of the side are appointed MBEs. “It was a great team effort and I’m really pleased all players have been honoured. It is something we can all take great pride in.”

Even all-rounder Paul Collingwood, who only played in the final Test at The Oval, is appointed an MBE.

Other members of England set-up recognised in Honours list include team coach Duncan Fletcher and chairman of selectors David Graveney, who both become OBEs.

Vice-captain Marcus Trescothick, who led England in one-day series in Pakistan in absence of injured Vaughan, admitted he was surprised at the award.

“It’s not something you expect to happen to you just for playing cricket. To be appointed an MBE by your country is a great honour. I think it shows just how much winning the Ashes meant to everybody.”

Seamer Simon Jones said award gave him a huge lift after disappointment of missing final Ashes Test at The Oval and recent tour to Pakistan with ankle injury.—Agencies
